Shakespeare & Company in Paris, France
Shakespeare & Company is a literary mecca for fans of American literature on the other side of the Atlantic. Located just a stone's throw from the iconic Notre-Dame cathedral, the bookstore was founded by an American, George Whitman. Greats like Allen Ginsberg, Anaïs Nin, Henry Miller, and James Baldwin were among early visitors to the shop. Then and now, Tumbleweeds, who are wanderers with a penchant for the written art, can crash among the shelves in exchange for light work, an autobiography, and the promise to read one book a day. There's something romantic about that vagabond lifestyle. But all in all, it is a bookstore, rich with history and continues to offer the latest and greatest American reads in Paris.

Their cafe is next door but there are plenty of options. This is a great stopping point for a brief browse or a long meandering stroll through the aisles. Fair warning, it is a bit crowded. But bonus view, you get to see the Notre-Dame Cathedral and the Seine.
