Chinatown in San Francisco, California
The Chinatown in San Francisco is entirely the most friendly and immersive one we’ve been to. Given this writer’s heritage, New York’s Chinatown was a frequent haunt in the 90’s. San Francisco’s Chinatown had events during our entire stay and walking by, we’d catch glimpses of lion dance practices or community talent shows. Lovely local residents would chat us up. This particular Chinatown boasts being the largest outside of Asia, and the oldest in North America. The city streets are lined with bakeries, herbalists, restaurants, and dim sum palaces. Red lanterns hang on the streets and the vibrant signs indulge the senses.
We made a pit stop at the famed fortune cookie factory, hidden in an alley, where we saw the edible delights being made with fast and expert hands. Of course we indulged in a bag of our own assorted flavored fortune cookies. We also indulged in classic favorites at a restaurant bursting with locals; beef rice noodles, pork and thousand year egg congee, fried rice and more.
