Timeout Market in Lisbon, Portugal

Timeout Market - a warehouse sized space that opened in May 2014, serves as a market, a cafeteria, a museum, and a gathering space. Come here and within stalls of each other, you will find decadent desserts, fresh seafood, succulent meat, and so much more. Lisbon is a relatively affordable city considering the quality and freshness of the food, as well as the intricacies of some dishes. Timeout Market is just a convenient location to eat, soak in the culture, and even buy some souvenirs.

The list of vendors is ever changing, but rest assured the market is always curating the best of the best. We had oysters from Marisqueira Azul, steak from Café de São Bento, sashimi from Sea Me, croquetes from Croqueteria, pastries from L’Éclair, pastéis de nata from Manteigaria, travesseiros de Sintra from Recordação de Sintra and so much more. The list of things we wanted to try was so long that we made two visits during our time in Lisbon. We also highly recommend A Vida Portuguesa for authentic old Portuguese products that double as souvenirs. We stocked up on cans of sardines at Conserveira de Lisboa. There are tons of fancy places and touristy places that sell canned fish, but these were so amazingly fresh.

Serving as a blueprint for other cities, the success of this Timeout Market led to the development of many others.

Tips
Anytime of day is great for a visit; if crowds are a concern, go earlier. Lisbon folks tend to eat late and stay out late but are later risers. That doesn’t mean other tourists won’t crowd the early hours.
